2021 Gymnastics NSW State Team
A team of 550 NSW gymnasts, judges and coaches are in their final preparations ahead of the first National Gymnastics event in two years – the 2021 Australian Gymnastics Championships.
Following state selection events, the gymnasts will represent NSW across 6 of the competitive styles of gymnastics – Acrobatic, Aerobic, Men’s Artistic, Rhythmic, Trampoline and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics. With 2020 competitions cancelled due to COVID 19, this will be the first time that the states have gone head-to-head since 2019 – where Gymnastics NSW walked away with more medals than any other state for 4th consecutive year.
Gymnastics NSW Events Manager Chris Martin recognises that while Australian Championships may look a little different, he expects the same outstanding performance from team GNSW.
“We have had to structure things in new ways this year, such as having our team members stay with families rather than together in a team. However, we know that after two years of waiting, our athletes are ready to get back out on competition floor and show Australia what we’ve got,” said Martin.
The event is also set to host the Continental Championships, one of the final trial events ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.
Trampoline gymnast Kira Ward is feeling ready.
“Before COVID, we had been flying around the World for about two years attending Olympic Trial Events …to finally be at the final step is really exciting,” said Ward
The Australian Gymnastics Championships will take place at Gold Coast Leisure Centre from the 13-26 May.
